Legal AI Efficacy Interview Series

There is so much hype about AI-powered legal technology tools, which is why the Legal AI Efficacy Report was conceived from a couple of simple questions: which tools work well and what is each tool designed to do? As we endeavored to answer those questions, our first step was to put together an Advisory Board of 14 “legal tech luminaries.” With their guidance, we have developed the industry’s most comprehensive resource on AI-powered legal technology tools.

However, there is another approach to answering these questions. In addition to asking what AI-powered legal tools do, we could also ask top law firms and legal departments how they are using AI-powered tools, and how effective they are. Again, we turned to our Advisory Board—and the Legal AI Efficacy Interview Series was developed.

Each interview is an in-depth look at a leading law firm or legal department’s AI journey, focusing on the problems they are facing and how well they are solving them. These interviews are designed as a supplementary resource to the Legal AI Efficacy Report and are available here for complimentary download to report subscribers and non-subscribers.

Deploying AI to Meet Speed and Cycle Time Goals

The first entry in the Legal AI Efficacy Interview Series is a conversation between Brad Blickstein and Jim Michalowicz, senior manager of legal operations at TE Connectivity. Michalowicz has been blazing trails in the legal field for decades. He was instrumental in some of the first legal department innovation programs at DuPont in the 1990s and he has been working with legal technology for his entire career.

At TE Connectivity, a $14 billion company, formerly known as Tyco Electronics, Michalowicz learned that their clients’ number-one priority was to reduce the time between when contracts were submitted to the legal team and when contracts came back. In this interview, he tells the story of their journey to solve that problem, ultimately by implementing an AI-based tool that is delivering at 67% reduction in cycle time.

This forthright interview delves into particulars about TE’s selection process, including specific problems faced by the team and how they overcame them, its implementation and change management processes, the reactions of the legal department and the business, and what’s next on TE’s legal AI roadmap. This interview is one of the deepest looks into the AI strategy and implementation process of one of the world’s leading legal departments.
